Design and Ergonomics
The waterproof design of the GoPro Hero5 Black is unique. It can withstand water up to 33 feet deep without needing external housing and is the first GoPro camera to achieve this feat. The Yi 4K is not waterproof. You can add waterproof housing to the Yi 4K for Rs1200. The Yi 4K has the same mounting hardware as the GoPro. The Yi 4K also features a tripod mount that allows it to be used without additional hardware.
Both cameras look very similar at first glance. The LCD display on Hero5 Black’s front panel displays basic information such as the current shooting mode and battery indicator.
It also shows how much space you have left for videos and photos. The Yi 4K’s rear touchscreen display is slightly larger (2.19 inches compared to the GoPro Hero5 Black’s 2-inch) and has a higher resolution.
Only one button is available on the Yi 4K, and it can be used to either start or stop video recording or to take a photograph. The touchscreen is required to change modes and other settings.
While this is fine, if the camera is used without waterproof housing, it becomes difficult to change settings. The Yi action cameras have a mode that allows you to use the shutter button to navigate through the various modes. The Yi 4K button on the case I tried it with was stiff and didn’t make for the best experience.
Only two buttons are available on the GoPro Hero5 Black: one at the top to record video and another at the side. This button doubles as a power button.
The Hero5 Black is water–resistant without casing, so none of the problems with the Yi 4K are affecting its useability. Both cameras have very well-designed menus that are easy to use. I would not choose one camera over the other.
Voice control is also available on the GoPro Hero5 Black, which I found very useful, especially when mounting the camera to my chest with GoPro’s chest plate or harness.
You can access different camera modes by simply speaking a few words. Voice control is a wonderful feature that allows me to start and stop recording video without needing to hold the camera or press a button.
The GoPro Hero5 Black and Yi 4K both have remote controls, but there are some key differences. The GoPro’s remote control is waterproof, while the Yi’s is not. The GoPro also has a touch screen, while the Yi does not. Finally, the GoPro has a longer battery life than the Yi camera.
They both use USB Type-C cables for charging and data transfer.
GoPro Hero5 Black vs Yi 4K: Display Quality
The touchscreen of the Yi 4K was far more responsive to my usage than the touchscreen on the GoPro Hero5 Black. The display, measuring 2.19 inches, is slightly larger than that on the GoPro Hero5 Black’s 2-inch screen. It was also sharper and brighter. However, the visibility of the display decreases when it is exposed to bright sunlight. The waterproof case will prevent you from using the touchscreen.

Hero5 Black vs Yi 4K: Image Quality
The GoPro produces brighter images and more vibrant colors than the Yi 4K action camera, but the images aren’t as sharp or detailed. Low-light photos are also affected by more noise. The Hero5 Black allows you to shoot in RAW. With some post-processing, it should be possible to reduce noise levels and produce results comparable to the Yi 4K’s.
Below are full-resolution images of the Yi 4K Black and the GoPro Hero5 Black. You can view the images in full resolution. The GoPro Hero5 Black produces a visible louder output than the Yi 4K action camera. There is also more smudging. GoPro should improve its image processing algorithms in order to produce images with more detail.
GoPro Hero5 Black vs. Yi 4K: Video Quality
Let’s take a look at the performance of these cameras with 4K video. These cameras do not have electronic image stabilization when recording 4k video at 30fps. The output of the GoPro Hero5 Black is visible to be more punchy. The colors are more vivid and true-to-the-scene than the Yi 4K’s output, but the output is louder, especially in dark areas.
Image stabilization can only be used when both cameras record video at a resolution of 2.7K or lower. Both cameras can shoot video at 60fps with electronic image stabilization enabled. Here is some footage shot with both cameras at 1080p at 30fps and the EIS mechanism.
The default GoPro Hero5 Black casing is not designed to completely cover the device. It was specifically made to reduce wind noise. Sound recording is superior to that of the Yi 4K, with or without the GoPro Hero5 Black’s default casing.
You can also record an audio track on the Hero5 Black, which allows you to apply processing depending on the manual audio control settings you have chosen. You have the option to lock your GoPro in stereo or wind reduction mode.
The Yi 4K has a 1,400mAh lithium battery, while the GoPro Hero5 Black packs a smaller 1,220mAh. The GoPro Hero5 Black ran out of juice almost immediately after I used the same settings and charged them simultaneously.
This was confirmed by setting both cameras to record 1080p video at 60 frames per second without image stabilization. The Hero5 Black only managed to last for about 2 hours. The Hero5 Black took 1 hour 47 minutes to record, while the Yi 4K took 2 hours and 28 mins. This is quite impressive.
Image stabilization is available on both cameras, but it is not available in 4K. Sony FDRX3000 provides optical image stabilization, which is also available in 4K. GoPro Hero5 vs. YI4K image stabilization isn’t available at a frame rate greater than 60 frames per second.
The field of view (FOV) of the YI 4K appears to be narrower than that of GoPro Hero5 in 1080p with image stabilization turned on. The FOV of the 4K video seems the same as the first. Although it’s difficult to say if Hero5’s 4K footage and stabilized 1080p footage is better, it’s hard to determine a winner.
The displays of both these cameras were compared, and it was found that the YI4K has a better response than GoPro Hero5 Black. The display size is larger for YI4K, which measures 2.19 inches, while Hero5 only has a 2-inch screen. In YI4K, the Touch Screen is more interactive. Hero5 may require you to press twice, especially when wet. GoPro’s front LCD display offers additional settings for easier control.
GoPro Hero5 has the advantage of being waterproof. YI 4K can’t, as it requires an additional protective case. However, you can’t protect your recordings from noise handling with the GoPro unit. If you use the touch screen feature of the YI 4K underwater while wearing protective housing, then audio quality will suffer.
Both cameras have 12MP resolution, and both come with digital image stabilization. Yi 4K offers a warmer, smoother photo quality. GoPro provides services for raw photography.
Different ratings should be compared when comparing video resolution to gain a better understanding of performance. Go Pro Hero5 offers maximum video quality at 30fps, 60fps, 4K, 2.7k, 1080p, 120fps, and 720p at 220fps. You can also avail 4K at 30fps or 2.5K at 30fps with Xiaomi YI4K, 1440p at 60fps with 1080p, 120fps with 1080p, and 720p at 200fps with 720p.
GoPro Hero5’s audio quality is much better than Yi 4K’s. Although the housing protects Hero5 from wind noise, it is possible to perform better without the housing than Yi 4K. Hero5 Black has three microphones, which allows for a better selection of audio streams.
An external microphone isn’t available for the YI-4K as it doesn’t support micro USB. GoPro Hero5 Black uses a USB C port. An adapter is available separately from GoPro.
Below is the audio test video
GoPro Hero5 can now be ordered online for $399, but the equally capable Xiaomi Yi Action Camera costs $199.99 only. Yi 4K, when compared with the hardware of both cameras, is found to deliver all desired high-performance results while meeting all sportspersons’ needs. You can consider buying a Xiaomi product that fits within your budget.
Hero5 Black – Special Features
GPS recording is another cool feature that GoPro offers. The Quick App for Desktop allows you to view the recorded data, including speed, G-Force, and elevation, as well as distance.
Waterproof without case
Hero5 Black is waterproof without a case, which is very useful when working in wet environments. It was raining in Iceland almost every day. It’s very easy to just set the cam and forget about the case. No fogging, no taking out to do settings changes. The screen is less responsive than YI 4K.
The GoPro Hero5 Black is a great action camera that can take stunning photos and videos. However, the Yi 4K is a worthy competitor that offers many of the same features at a lower price. In the end, it comes down to personal preference and what you are looking for in an action camera.
