The DJI Phantom has seen a remarkable transformation. While the previous Phantom models all had a very similar structure, the Phantom 4 already stands out from its predecessors.
While other drones are not necessarily harder to pilot and get started with, DJI makes it easy and straightforward.
The DJI Phantom 4 drone is very well-built and will fly smoothly if you haven’t flown one before. You can get to your destination faster, or have fun with the new Sport mode. The Obstacle Sensing system can avoid head-on collisions and track subjects. Slow-motion video can be a great addition to an already excellent camera.
The Obstacle Sensing System can only see things in front of the drone. To use the drone battery and controller, you will need a tablet/phone. Additional batteries can be expensive. The camera and landing gear are attached to the body so that you cannot collapse the camera for travel.
The Transformation of DJI Phantom
The DJI Phantom 4 drone’s body is much larger, and its arms are shorter than the Phantom 3. The Quadrocopter gives off a strong and high-quality impression.
The DJI Phantom 4 also has an image stabilization system with a fixed gimbal and a built-in camera. It cannot be replaced, just like the three series. The main difference is that the 3-axis Gimbal is attached to the body, and the damper plate has been removed. These components are made from magnesium which should result in a stable copter and lower vibration. Jello effects should be gone, it seems.
The push-and-release propellers are also new and can be mounted faster. This propeller system makes it easier to get the quadrocopter in the air faster.
The batteries are another innovation. The DJI Phantom 3 Professional’s new 4S LiPo batteries offer a 25% longer flight duration. DJI claims that the DJI Phantom 3 Professional can fly for up to 30 minutes of flight time. We were able to achieve comparable flight times in our tests. Although this is a significant improvement, it also comes with a major disadvantage. DJI Phantom drone owners cannot reuse their batteries. The Phantom 4 batteries are completely new. This is an important aspect to remember when making a purchase. New cells can be expensive. It would be impossible for me to purchase one of the previous models.

DJI Phantom 4: Standard and Advanced vs Pro

The Phantom 4 was the first DJI drone with forward-facing obstacle avoidance sensors. The DJI Phantom 4 Pro also has additional sensors for obstacle detection and an infrared sensor on the left and right. This allows obstacles to be detected from almost every direction. The side infrared sensors can only be activated in Beginners mode, TabFly, and ActiveTrack modes, and they are rarely used. The anti-collision system should not be relied upon too heavily.
The Phantom 4 Advanced has a better camera than the standard version. The specifications of the standard version are the same as those of the DJI Mavic Pro. If you don’t mind that, the Mavic Pro is a better choice. It’s lighter and easier to transport. Although the DJI Phantom 4 Standard is no more sold at the DJI-Store it can still be bought through other dealers.
The Advanced and Pro are better options if you have high demands. In the next paragraph, I will describe the details of the camera.
The difference between the Advanced & Pro is not only due to the addition of sensors for the anti-collision systems, but also because there are insignificant differences. The Advanced remote control communicates only in the 2.4 GHz frequency band. The DJI Phantom 4 Pro can also transmit at 5.8 GHz. This makes it more resistant to interference from other wireless networks, such as Wi-Fi networks. It is less likely to experience disconnections due to this.
The Phantom 4’s features

Tapfly DJI now offers a flight function that should be very exciting for beginners. Tap on a point on the preview image of your tablet. Tapfly allows the DJI Phantom 4 to fly to this location and avoids obstacles.
ActiveTrack is a function that’s particularly interesting on the Phantom 4. ActiveTrack allows you to mark an object on your tablet or smartphone with ActiveTrack. The drone will then follow the subject as it moves. These maneuvers require skill and experience. ActiveTrack makes it easy to carry out such operations. The satellite-based localization by GLONASS receiver of the copter, in addition to a GPS module (GLONASS Russian alternative to American GPS), is even more precise. Are you crashproof? Yes, but not so much.
The Phantom 4 is the first consumer model to come with the DJI OSS obstacle-avoidance system. The quadcopter is built with a pair of optical sensors at its front. These will allow it to navigate around and over obstacles within 0.7 to 15. meters (2.3 to 49 ft) of it. Or it will just stop and hover until it’s gone. It also allows for a few new flight modes that I’ll be discussing in a moment.
It works well for the most part and will probably prevent accidental collisions. You can also test it by flying it at objects like fences, buildings, cars, or yourself and it will stop automatically. Trees are what I am most concerned about when I fly.
A tree that is more than 100 feet high can be clipped and cause it to either fall uncontrollably or get stuck, much like a cruel Christmas tree ornament. It is important to be able to avoid trees when you use the return-to-home feature to summon the drone back to your location.
I was surprised at how well the Phantom 4 performed. The Northeast was heading into spring and I was testing just as it was. I was also flying among a lot of winter-bare trees. The autonomous flight to me was a smooth one. It stopped easily and flew into a line of pine trees. It didn’t recognize leaves-covered branches as obstacles when it navigated around them. It might have stopped if the branches were thick with leaves. Or maybe operator error.
You see, I came at the tree from an angle that was outside the OSS’s visual range. It only senses what is in front of it, and not to its sides, or behind. The system will stop a head-on collision but it won’t have any problem crashing it in other directions. The OSS is great for pilots, but it can create a false sense of security for a new pilot.
Sport Mode Can be Fun But It Can Also Be Dangerous For Novices
You take a drone flight at speeds of up to 45 mph (72 km/h) with the Phantom 4’s sport mode. All you have to do is flip a switch on your controller. You can fly forward and back at 6 meters (20ft) per second, and descend at 4m (13ft) per second. This makes it possible to reach the desired location faster and get the shot you want. You can enjoy a racing drone experience with the HDMI module. You can also connect FPV goggles to the controller to fully immerse yourself in this experience.
However, a little movement of the stick can make a big difference. The OSS isn’t available in Sport mode, so if your plane crashes into something, these sensors won’t be able to help. It takes longer for the drone to stop if it is traveling at top speed. This warning is displayed by DJI Go on the DJI Go app, but it will not be repeated. It’s not something I recommend for pilots who are new to the mode.
You probably have the idea now. The Obstacle Sensing System may keep you safe, but it is not a reason to fly recklessly or to not know how to properly control the drone.
It inherits all the Intelligent Flight Mode features from its predecessor, including:
- Point Of Interest: The aircraft orbits the subject automatically
- Follow me: The aircraft tracks your movements and follows your mobile device.
- Waypoint The aircraft follows a recorded flight path that has been drawn in the app.
- Automatic Home Return: The aircraft automatically returns to its last known Home Point. This can be done manually or by charging the battery at 10%.
The camera system is largely unchanged from its predecessor. DJI has made some improvements to the camera system. The 1/2.3″ Exmor CMOS sensor is still present, providing 12.4MP still images. It can also capture C4K video at 24 frames per second, just like its predecessor. The drone takes 1080p FHD video at 120 frames per second for slow-motion videos.
DJI also fitted the drone with a 20mm f/2.8 lens. This improves edge sharpness and reduces chromatic aberration. The lens also provides a better quality image overall. It also reduces barrel distortion which is a nice feature.
An update to the 3-axis Gimbal is another change. Two mounting points are now available for the gimbal, which reduces vibrations by up to 50% compared with its predecessor. It offers a wide range of shooting modes including bursts, time-lapses, and HDR. T And full manual control over the camera are available, be it white balance, ISO, or shutter speed, to name a few.. You can adjust the drone’s altitude using an on-screen line called the horizon. Tap above or below it to change its height. You can also use your sticks to control the drone’s direction for your shot.
It allows you to create a single-point flight plan on the fly. This is combined with the drone’s auto-takeoff feature that can be accessed via the app. Anyone could “fly” the Phantom 4 by simply swiping and tapping the app.
The controller has a Pause button that allows you to set the drone to hover and stop if you need to pause and think about your next move. The Pause button is available in all modes.
The Lightbridge remote control that DJI uses to operate the drone is the same as the one used in the previous model. The remote has buttons for shutter release and video control as well as gimbal tilt and Return Home. The Phantom 3 Professional’s out-of-the-box flight experience isn’t much different, but it’s still comparable to the Phantom 3. While the Phantom 4 is more capable, offers a less expensive way to learn and capture image quality and video recording while you fly.
But rest assured, If you want to take great photos and videos, the DJI Phantom 4 Advanced and DJI Phantom 4 Pro are the best options. The most significant strength of the DJI Phantom 4 Advanced / Pro is the sophisticated camera for you. This camera is my experience and the best in this market.
