DJI is back with a new version of the Osmo Mobile 2. The new device has many improvements, including better video quality and stabilization, an improved battery life, and support for additional camera lens attachments.

The Osmo Mobile 2 weighs less and is cheaper than its predecessor. However, it has a better smartphone camera stabilization system than any other one we have tested. It uses AI to track subjects. With a new portrait mode, it is even ready for Instagram Stories and Snapchat Generation.

DJI Osmo Mobile 2 – Features
Oslo Mobile 2’s stability is due to its three-axis gimbal technology. It has sensors built-in and brushless motors that compensate for movements around three pivot points.
The gimbal has a dual clamp that allows you to hold your smartphone in two formats. This means that you can either shoot landscapes or portraits for Instagram stories. You can switch formats by loosening the lock nut at the back of your clamp and then rotating the clamp to the other position.
You can also use the Osmo Mobile 2 to charge your mobile phones. You should note that the charging port is not visible during use and cannot be used to charge your phone while it is mounted in the Osmo Mobile 2.
The Osmo Mobile 2’s base has a 1/4 inch screw mount that can be attached to your tripod. DJI offers an optional holder that can be used to hold the unit on a table or desk.
It can not only hold your smartphone but can also connect via Bluetooth. You can zoom, stop, and even start recording using the controls on its gimbal.
DJI’s mobile app, Go, is essential to use the Mobile 2 because it allows for the connection between the gimbal (and the phone) and provides access to image and video options.
DJI Osmo Mobile 2 – Design
The Osmo Mobile 2’s material is really new. DJI claims it is made of high-strength modified nylon. This helps explain why the devices have lost a few pounds. Many of the buttons and controls are still familiar elsewhere. A joystick adjusts the camera angle. There is also a record button and a power button /mode switch to swap between different gimbal modes. The side has a zoom rocker that allows you to adjust the zoom level of your phone’s camera.
Osmo Mobile 2 locks your phone using a spring-loaded clamp. It can support phones up to the size of a phablet, but larger devices may need to be removed. For example, my iPhone 7 Plus wouldn’t work with the Osmo Mobile 2 because it was still in its thick silicone case.
The Osmo Mobile 2 has the ability to position your phone in portrait mode. This is one of the most important changes. The Osmo Mobile is used to hold your phone in a standard landscape. Although recording portrait orientation was once frowned upon in the past, people are increasingly using Snapchat and Instagram Stories to format their videos.
It is frustrating that you need to unlock your smartphone clamp and rotate it physically to switch between landscape and portrait orientations. You might also need to take your smartphone out of the clamp to accomplish this. Smartphone gimbals can do this by pressing a button. The motor will reorient the camera. The Osmo Mobile 2 is a little more complicated.
Even better, you have a USB port that can be connected to your smartphone to charge your Osmo Mobile 2’s battery. This will drain the Osmo Mobile 2’s battery quicker, but it can help you get out of a jam on a shoot. Micro USB charges the Osmo mobile 2 rather than USB-C which is becoming more common
It worked with all of the current phones we tested with it: the iPhone X, iPhone 8, Google Pixel 2, and Samsung Galaxy Note 8.
DJI Osmo Mobile 2 – DJI Go App
The DJI Go app is pretty straightforward to use and once you’ve connected your various accounts, it’s easy to record video or stream live to Youtube or Facebook Live. The Osmo Mobile 2 can be connected to your iPhone or Android smartphone via Bluetooth. It can also be controlled by the DJI Go companion application. You can use your default video app on your phone, but DJI’s software will allow you to do so much more.
Except for tricky situations where there was not much contrast or if the lighting was very dim, tracking was quite consistent. This made it difficult for DJI Go to recognize me. This is a problem that I have encountered with other DJI drones.
Zoom rocker only works with DJI’s video recorder. There are many reasons to choose the optional app. You can also adjust the settings of the gimbal, such as switching between sport and standard walking modes. This will allow you to tweak the stabilization. It even allows you to invert the joystick controls which is a feature that is not available on other gimbals.
It can also be used with the DJI Go app. This app lets you take professional-looking shots with your iPhone or Android phone. It is well worth looking into for serious budding videographers.
This option is necessary for certain situations, as the DJI Go app does not support all frame rates and resolution options that your phone supports. The app doesn’t support 24fps recording, even though my iPhone 8 Plus can record at this setting. DJI Go supports 4K recording at 30fps and 1080p at 30, 60, or 60fps. It also supports 720p at 30-fps.
Slow-motion suffers from the same problem. Osmo supports 720p capture at 120fps. This can lead to a 10x slowdown when played back at 24fps. The DJI Go app doesn’t support 1080p at 120fps. I would like the app to be updated to include all features that are supported by your phone.
The Osmo Mobile 2 has a variety of capture modes, just like the Osmo Mobile. SmoothTrack will follow your arm’s movements to minimize shake; ActiveLock will try its best to lock onto a point no matter where you move, and Face Tracking will lock onto the face of your subject target.
This feature is borrowed from DJI’s drone line. It uses object recognition to track the subject as it moves through the frame. It’s very useful and makes it much easier to keep your pet or child in the frame while you shoot home video.
Osmo also supports several different speeds-up video modes. Standard Timelapse takes a still at a predetermined interval (options range from 0.5 seconds to 60 seconds in full-second increments beginning at 1 second) and then combines it into a 4K video. The time-lapse can be set to run until it is stopped or for a specific duration. If you choose a length, the app will let you know how long your resulting video is. To preserve your phone’s battery time, you can also dim the phone’s screen during capture.
Hyperlapse is a time-lapse that’s captured while you move freely. As you can see from the embedded clip, it’s a time-lapse. Active Track allows you to control the gimbal motion but not zoom.
Motionlapse is finally here. Motionlapse is best used with a tripod. The Osmo moves slowly to capture a time-lapse video and can be set up at multiple angles.
Motion Timelapse, Hyperlapse. and the ability to stream live to Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram. When you’re shooting stills, the Mobile 2 offers Panorama, Long Exposure, and LightTrail modes.
It is not possible to attach an external mic to iPhone 7 models because the phone is secured with a clamp around the base. Although it may be possible with other phones, the phone is held in place by a clamp around its base.
Once the DJI Go app has been installed on your mobile. It’s free to download and easy to use, letting you control your phone’s camera from the unit’s buttons (via a Bluetooth connection). It’s as simple as opening the Mobile 2 app and then you can start shooting. The pairing worked great for me on all occasions. A press of the record button on my gimbal would always trigger the phone to begin rolling.
The Osmo Mobile 2 was tested in various conditions, including running across fields, skiing, and walking, using both the front and rear cameras of an iPhone 7, and it does a very good job of ironing out the usual shake and wobble associated with hand-holding your mobile while you’re shooting video.
ActiveTrack works best when there is a clear contrast between background and subject. However, it can get confused if the background and subject are less distinct. Mobile 2 could get confused if the background and subject are not clearly defined.
It can also be difficult to see the selection area of the phone screen in bright sunlight. This was an issue while skiing so I just tried to aim my phone in the right direction. Although shooting video of me using the rear camera was easy, following a moving target down a slope was more difficult. However, I was able to capture some great footage that was well edited.
When the DJI Go app has been activated, tap the camera icon on the screen to access the video resolution, Beautify effects, Manual Adjust (of Exposure), White Balance, Grid, Flash, and other options.
The Manual Adjust controls on the iPhone 7 allow you to adjust the sensitivity (ISO 22 to 704) or shutter speed (Auto or 1/3-1/12000sec) and white balance (Auto or Kelvin values between 2000-8000). You can choose from the standard White Balance settings, which include Sunny, Cloudy, and Incandescent, or a Custom setting.
To set the scene mode (Walk, Sport), and lock the Pitch by tapping the gimbal icon, tap the gimbal icon. The Pitch Lock locks the camera in one vertical plane. This makes it easy to follow a subject around a level area.

The battery is another notable difference between Osmo’s first and second-gen models. The previous Osmo had a removable battery; the new model has an internal non-removable one.
Although it may appear like a downgrade, this is not. Not even close. This means that it is now more powerful than ever. The camera stabilizer will now last for 15 hours without needing to be charged. This is an increase of just four hours for the original model.
You can use the gimbal to charge your smartphone and extend the filming time. This means you don’t have to worry about your smartphone not being able to withstand a day of filming. It is a wonderful feature.
The quality of your video depends on which phone you use. However, with modern flagship smartphones like the iPhone 8 and Galaxy S9 you can capture strong 4K footage. Osmo Mobile2 provides the best stabilization. My phone’s optical image stabilization caused a jitter in the early firmware. This has been removed by a software upgrade. The only time I felt a tingle was when I changed my grip from my left to mine during a recording.
To capture still images, you can also use Osmo. It won’t offer any additional benefits over your phone’s internal stabilization system for standard capture. However, if you have a handset that doesn’t have the feature it can still help to steady the device in low light.
Osmo has no tools for panorama image stitching. Although it does a great job of capturing multiple images and stitching them together, it can take quite a while. To capture the 27 images required for a 180-degree panorama, you must hold the gimbal still for at least one minute. Then you need to wait for the app to stitch them together for another 90 seconds.
In the past, recording video in portrait orientation might have been frowned upon, but with the existence of Snapchat and IG Stories, increasingly folk wish to format their video for these platforms.
To use zoom functions, adjust settings, and select other modes, you will need to download DJI’s Go app for Android or iOS. However, once your machine is paired, the record button works fine within the native camera app of our iPhone. The physical zoom slider cannot be used. This feature is only available in the DJI Go App.
The device instantly springs into action upon switching on, automatically orienting the attached phone and balancing it. This allows you to immediately start recording steady footage.
The Osmo Mobile 2’s 15-hour battery time has been increased by three times over its predecessor. Although you can’t hot-swap your battery like with the original Osmo Mobile it is possible to get 15 hours of battery time. There’s also a new indicator that shows the level of battery health which we used – we were warned.
You can charge your phone using a standard USB port located on the back of the unit and the device itself via a micro USB socket. This generation of the gimbal does not include the superior, reversible USB port.
DJI has done a great job with the Osmo Mobile 2. It is an excellent choice for someone who wants to have their hands free and shoot videos on the go without breaking the bank. The quality of this camera will not disappoint you if you are looking for a reasonably priced device that can fit in your pocket or bag when it’s not being used. If you’re looking to capture incredibly smooth footage from your smartphone then the DJI Osmo Mobile 2 will certainly give you the results you want.
