. Although it’s a solid performer, you will pay more to be able to control the quadcopter from your smartphone. You’ll also discover that many camera features require an app. At $999.99, the DJI Air 2S is a smaller drone with similar cameras and is a better choice.
Build & Design
All three models in this lineup leverage the same body design, where the differences lie in their camera payloads. But, they use a new foldable design that’s slightly larger than the previous model. And a design bearing a solid resemblance to DJI’s Mavic 2 Pro. But at 1150 g (2.5 lbs), it’s quite a bit larger and doesn’t quite fit into the palm of your hand.
Granted, its larger wingspan does help when it comes to air stability. It also has quite a bit taller stance since Autel’s added legs on all four arms. And this addition gives the drone a useful 22 mm ground clearance, making it easier to take off on uneven surfaces without a helipad. So comparatively, it doesn’t have the same ultra low profile design as the Mavic series. But, it’s a design change that works to its benefit.
Autel’s also refined the battery locking mechanism this go-round. And this new model now uses the Battlock System to prevent accidental ejections during flight. This re-design is also far easier to remove and replace than its predecessor, which required substantial force to remove. And the battery also includes LEDs to display their present charge.
Overall, Autel has notably refined the design over the original model. It still sports the bold orange finish. But, now it’s a new matte finish, rather than the shiny plastic. But, it’s a welcome return. And this color becomes a key separator amongst rivals, as it makes the drone highly visible and easily identifiable in the sky. Interestingly, the materials used also feel noticeably more premium and in line with its price point. So overall, the build quality and design here are improved. And they’re good for the premium segment.
Autel’s includes 8 GBs of onboard storage as a backup if you run out of space on the MicroSD card. And you can access the media stored on it via the drone’s USB-C port. Otherwise, the drone has a MicroSD slot that houses cards up to 256 GBs.
The EVO II Pro is quite large for a small drone. It measures 4.5 by 4.3x 9.0 inches (HWD) and has a 2.6-pound takeoff mass. Bright orange makes it very visible. Since I can recall, Autel has been using this color scheme. It pops against the blue sky and green fields making it a lot easier to spot than drones with duller finishes.
To use the EVO II Pro, drone operators who fly in the US must register with the FAA. You can find all details on the FAA Drone Zone website. A $5 fee covers most people for three years. You will need to complete a certification course if you are flying for pay. It’s a good idea for beginners to learn the basics of drones.
The airframe has obstacle sensors around the plane. At normal speed, they will prevent the aircraft from colliding with anything, leaving you free to focus on your photography. The EVO II’s flight battery is quite large and allows for a 40 minute flight time that is the best in its class. However, the battery life in real-world situations can vary. My testing time was closer to 32 minutes, which is slightly more than the DJI Mavic Air 2 or Air 2S, but not by much.
The EVO’s flying style is crucial. Hovering in the air takes more power than forwarding flying. The battery can hover for 35 minutes. You can also drain it faster when you go to high-speed flight mode, Ludicrous speed. It’s not clear if this is a reference to Spaceballs, Fast and Furious, or both.
The EVO II’s standard flight mode is 22 mph. It also offers all-around obstacle detection. This is very useful when working at lower altitudes, where trees and other obstacles may pose a problem. Switching to Ludicrous mode when you fly higher above trees gives footage more motion.
Autel has put 8GB of storage in the drone. There’s also a micro USB port that can be connected to a computer to offload files. A memory card is almost a necessity, as it doesn’t have enough space to store 6K footage. It’s not a big deal as microSD cards don’t cost much. You can buy a 64GB card for $20.
GPS is used to stabilize the EVO. It hovers without noticeable drift thanks to its many sensors and pinpoint satellite positioning. You can view the drone’s position on a map if you use the included remote. The EVO II still offers automated return-to-home.
You can set limits on the distance that your drone can fly but it cannot enforce geofences around airports or other restricted flight areas. This means that you have to check if your location is allowed for you to take off. Check the FAA’s app B4UFLY if you have any questions.
Pro pilots who are familiar with the rules and regulations of where they can fly will find this drone appealing. DJI drones automatically enforce restricted and no-fly zones. This means that certified pilots must go through an unlocking procedure before taking off. You don’t need to do anything extra if you have permission.
The Autel Explorer app does not offer dynamic adjustments or flight control. The only options you have are to adjust the Rotational EXP settings or the Gimbal pitch speed. You don’t have the flexibility to customize your flying experience. DJI drone, however, offers throttle, rotation, and vertical movement. This is a huge difference.
The RC controller is in need of an update, as this is the second-generation release. It’s not the most ergonomic controller, with two awkwardly folded-out handles made from slick plastic. It’s also difficult to hold if your palms are sweaty. It is also disappointing that Autel has not included a better routing solution for connecting the mobile device.
The RC only has one USB Type-A port. The port is also without a cubby for the cable to be stored away. Connecting any cable to this port will cause it to dangle from the side. They don’t include any other connectors, except for one USB-C. This means that you will have to purchase your own if you don’t have a USB -C-equipped phone. It’s so strange. It doesn’t include a Lightning cable, though, so you’ll need to bring your own if you’re an iPhone owner.
This logic is not clear to us. Also, note that the rear A/B buttons are located in the grip. This position makes it easy to accidentally press them. You’ll also activate unwelcome features if you do. This occurs at least once per flight and slows down the workflow. The remote is not built or designed well and is an inferior product.
It also doesn’t have a USB-C port on the remote controller, which is odd considering that this type of connection is available to aircraft. It also doesn’t have a switch that allows you to quickly switch between flight modes.
The pitch control’s gimbal pitch wheel doesn’t offer much motion range. You must be careful when moving the wheel so that it doesn’t max out the pitch and ruin the shot.

The lower right offers fine-tuned settings. It also displays the tilt of the gimbal, which is very useful. It also displays standard information like battery life, longitudinal and latitudinal coordinates, and a map. It also uses Google Maps to give more information about the area.
The drone feels a little heavy in the air but is very agile. It feels almost like flying an aircraft. It will immediately make you feel its durability and robustness. Although the Digital Zoom option can be a little disappointing when used, it is easy to access just like any other function on the menu.

You can also use the time-lapse mode to capture both JPEG as well as RAW images. Hyperlapse Mode captures time-lapse videos that include movement.
It can be exposed for long periods of time, up to 8 seconds.

Drone-Works provided me with the Robotics EVO II “Rugged Bundle”, which included a GPC-designed hard case. The package also includes two additional sets of propellers as well as an extra flight battery.
